Chapter Four

Lachlan couldn’t help the grin on his face as he sipped hot coffee. He’d put a casserole in the small oven. It would take an hour to be ready because he still preferred the older style ovens from his childhood. In 2012 when he was four, he recalled his mother cooking and how delicious everything smelled when cooked in the old ovens. Things changed, evolved as he grew older, some for the better but most not so much. It seemed as technology evolved, the way men thought took the opposite road. How could they hunt people because they were different, to control them, to use them as weapons?

But his mind went back to the reason for his smile…Sofia, who denied with everything in her that she wouldn’t be mated. Yet when they were tangled in the middle of the woods, taking each other to the heights of pleasure, Lachlan felt it, the bond from his heart to hers. It would take time for her to get accustomed to the thought, but he had all the time in the world. After all, he and Colleen would be going with her to the sanctuary her father built.

“Must you sit there with that goofy grin on your face,” Sofia asked tiredly.

“Aye, because I’m feeling particularly happy right now,” Lachlan replied.

“Just because we had sex in the woods, doesn’t mean a damn thing,” Sofia retorted. “We were both caught up in the moment, adrenaline and all that crap.”

“How is your wound? Maybe you should let me take a look at it.” Lachlan got up from his chair.

Sofia stepped back and raised her hands to ward him off. “No! It’s fine. I washed it while I showered and it’s already healing.”

He raised an eyebrow. “That was a very quick refusal. Could it be that you are worried about me touching you again? Maybe you like it too much.”

Sofia shot him an angry glare. “Don’t give yourself too much credit, it was adequate.”

“I’ll have to bring my A game then,” Lachlan replied casually. He knew she was lying but left it alone…for now. “I’ve got a chicken casserole in the oven, should be ready in about forty five minutes. Should we call your Army Beasts?”

“Yeah let me get dressed,” she answered.

He watched her back as she pulled on a jersey shirt that accentuated her curves, and a pair of jeans. She pulled on a pair of bright green socks with snowmen and he chuckled to himself. Inside this tightly wound woman who was so fixed and determined lived a vivacious fun woman longing to be free. Even though they lived someplace safe, the traveling, each mission had to take its toll. Sofia took a small black case out of the backpack and came to sit on the table across from him. He looked at the small handheld computer in her hand. It was smaller than any of the units available on the market, with a sleek, slick design. The casing was opaque though, and he could see all the wires and chips.
